- Have a ‘Funday Monday’ (or whatever day of the week you choose.) Taking turns each week, one mom hosts a play date for the kids. Moms sit around, chatting and eating, and kids can play. Keep it very simple–pot luck and water/tea. There is little expense and it’s a reason to clean the house every few weeks. Have sprinklers and little pools in the backyard, along with bubbles and sidewalk chalk.
- Have a lemonade stand! Make and decorate it from scratch or use second hand crates. Set it up on the corner or near a park with some foot traffic. Consider using the money you earn to bless someone with an unexpected gift.
- Do you know your neighbors? Get outside and invite them over for a BBQ! If you don’t make a regular practice of having guests over, start now. It’s never too late.
If it’s too hot outside or on rainy days, try one of these ideas:
- Play a long game of Monopoly or Bananagrams.
- Bake something yummy. Make cupcakes and let the kids decorate them with bags of frosting and decorator’s icing tips.
- Go puddle jumping!
- Spend the afternoon scrapbooking or journaling. Keep scrap papers and a basket of scrapbook items handy. When a rainy day rolls around, the materials are there, ready to be used.
- Before the rain comes go to an appliance store and ask for any large boxes. You can make a playhouse out of one by cutting windows and a door. Then let your kids go wild coloring them with magic markers. You can also get several smaller ones from any grocery store and make train cars for each child.
- Play in the rain. Try floating a sail boat, just a stick through a leave, along the sidewalk and into the gutter.
- For older kids, pull out 1000 pc. puzzles for an all-day/weekend activity.
- For younger kids, pile all the pillows in parent’s bed or pull out the hide-a-bed and have a reading marathon.
- Look at family photo albums and rehearse family “Thanksgiving”stories
- Keep a craft box handy and spend an afternoon making crafts
- Record or video tape the kids doing activities
- Have an indoor camp out!
- Make photo books on Shutterfly or other photo book service
