Ordinary Mom with Extraordinary Power

Julia DesCarpentrie

Thursday morning was typical in the rush to get everyone out the door for school before I headed to a meeting.  All was going well and as the kids exited the car in the drop-off lane, my kindergartner bumped his head on my elbow.  Not hard, so I gave a quick kiss and sent him on his way.

When I began to pull away I noticed the tears in his eyes as he watched me leave.  I quickly pulled into the first empty parking spot and ran over to him before he walked in the school doors.  I scooped him up and asked about his head.

My son's attitude quickly transformed from discouragement into confidence.  After a kiss, he wriggled out of my arms and skipped into school. The encounter lasted less than 60 seconds but had changed my son's day.

A staff member was watching our little exchange.  She came over and thanked me for taking the time to stop and comfort my son. She noted that not many parents would have taken the time on a busy morning to find a parking space and hurry back to comfort their child.  She also mentioned the close bond I had with this little boy whom I obviously had not given birth to.

I shared with her how adopting our son had blessed our family.  I thanked her for her kind words and hurried back to my car.  I was now going to be late to my meeting.

While driving, I replayed the incident in my mind.  When I first noticed my son crying I thought about brushing it off and continuing to drive.  I had a committment to keep.  What made me stop?

Ah, yes.  That "still small voice."  I had prayed that morning before my busy day commenced that the Holy Spirit would guide my actions and order my day.

If functioning in my own will, I would have continued on.  I would not have had the opportunity to share with the staff member about the blessing of my son's adoption.

Am I Super Mom?  Nah, just an ordinary mom depending on an extraordinary God.
